Lady ‘Jays complete comeback (Girls basketball roundup)

MARSHFIELD — Marshfield rallied from a 10-point deficit to hit the game-winning shot with five seconds to play and beat Pleasant Hope 49–48 on Monday.
Marshfield, which is 8–5 and was second at the Pink & White Tournament, travels to Reeds Spring in the Central Ozark Conference Small Schools Division opener for both teams on Tuesday.
In other games on Monday:
— Hollister received 21 points from JaeLynn Ellison in its 66–57 triumph over Forsyth.
The Lady Tigers received 16 points apiece from Cassandra Kimbrough and Lainie Bishop.
Hollister is 7–4 and begins conference play on Thursday at Springfield Catholic.
— Webb City opened conference play by downing Neosho 65–21.
Kaitlin Jaeger and Kyndal Clark both netted 16 points for the Lady Cards.
— Springfield Catholic beat Aurora 71–45 to improve its record for 4–6.

Hollister captures eighth win (Girls basketball roundup)

MANSFIELD — Hollister was 22-of-25 on its free-throw attempts while winning at Mansfield 64–57 on Tuesday.
The Lady Tigers (8−4) had four players in double figures. JaeLynn Ellison netted 16 points, Lainie Bishop 15, Cassandra Kimrbough a dozen and Becca Felks 10.

— Marshfield doubled up Reeds Spring 56–28 in a Central Ozark Conference Small Schools Division contest.
The Lady ‘Jays are 9–5 overall and 1–0 in the COC.

REPUBLIC — Nick Yocum led four Republic players in double figures on Friday as the Tigers beat Marshfield 69–59.
Republic also received 14 points from Josh Morrow, 11 from Dylan Fletcher and nine from Kevin Stander.

— Branson moved to 14–1 by edging Bolivar 65–59.
Avery Dingman collected 22 points, four steals and three blocks to lead the Pirates. Dana Thomas contributed 11 points and eight boards, Chris Odgen had 12 points and Sam Pugh 11.

Luko among nation’s top shooters (Girls basketball alumni)

Nixa grad Ashley Luko is ranked second in NAIA D-I in 3-point field-goal percentage. Despite a recent 2-of-8 slump beyond the arc, the Evangel guard is 33-of-64 on her 3-point attempts (.515).
Luko is averaging 13.8 points a game.
Other COC alumni faring well at the college level include:
— Nixa grad Morgan Smith is averaging 16.8 points a game as a freshman forward at College of the Ozarks.
Smith, who also played at Marshfield, is shooting 52 percent from the field and has posted double-figure scoring in 17 of 19 games.
— Bolivar grad Casey Garrison tops Misosuri State with a 19.1 scoring average, 109 assists and an average of 36.4 minutes played.
— Marshfield grad Lacey Boshe has had norms of 9.9 points and 3.8 rebounds for the Lady Bears.
— Hollister grad Breanna Daniels is averaging 12.1 points and 4.2 rebounds a game as a sophomore forward at Truman State.
— Marshfield grad Kayla Messick tops C of O with 53 assists and has hit 25 3-pointers while averaging 5.3 points a game.
— Willard grad Megan Jewell has also hit 25 treys for C of O while averaging 5.4 points a game.

Bade’s explosion lifts Catholic (Girls basketball roundup)

SPRINGFIELD — Bekah Bade broke loose for 27 second-half points en route to a 33-point performance in Springfield Catholic’s 64–58 win over Seymour on Monday.
Bade netted 19 points in the third quarter alone. She finished with eight 3-pointers.
Danielle Lampe added 13 points for the Lady Irish.
Elsewhere on Monday:
— Nixa downed Marshfield 65–28.
The Lady ‘Jays fell to 11–7, while the Lady Eagles improved to 16–2.
Marshfield returns to Central Ozark Conference Small Schools Division play on Tuesday by meeting Buffalo.

The Lady ‘Jays improved to 12–7 overall and 2–0 in conference play.

Neosho knocks off Ozark (Boys basketball roundup)

NEOSHO — Alex Wise poured in 21 points and hit two free throws with 2 seconds to play while leading Neosho past Ozark 56–55 in a Central Ozark Conference Large Schools Division thriller on Friday.
Wise swished 10-of-11 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter alone. His winning free throws came after the Tigers’ Isaiah Monroe made two free throws with 10 seconds left.
Ozark led 51–42 with 4:35 to play.
The Wildcats received 14 points from Corey Crandall and 10 from Michael Lowe. Ozark was led by Austin Holtzclaw’s 18 points, Dylan Hord’s 13 and Monroe’s 10.
Neosho improved to 13–8 overall and 2–1 in conference play. The loss dropped Ozark to 18–4 and 1–2.
Elsewhere on Friday:
— At Marshfield, Utah Findley and Jared Greenlee were a dynamic duo in Marshfield’s 63–61 overtime win over Springfield Catholic in a COC Small Schools Division clash on Friday.
Findley scored a game-high 28 points and Greenleee netted 24.
Catholic received 20 points from Jack Wolf and nine from Jeff White.
— Reeds Spring won at Forsyth 59–48, thanks to a 15–0 third-quarter run.
The Wolves trailed 23–15 at intermission after scoring just two points in the second quarter. They responded by scoring 20 in the third period and 24 in the final stanza.
Reeds Spring hit 16-of-19 free-throw attempts.
Alex English topped the winners with 13 points, all of them coming in the second half. Chris Jones contributed a dozen, Marcus Johnson scored 11, Johnny Willis chipped in with 10 and Ben Selby had nine.

Lady Cards have two 3-time winners (Swimming)

WEBB CITY — Webb City’s Erica Logal and Ashley Johnson claimed three firsts while helping the Lady Cardinals capture third place at the Central Ozark Conference Swim Meet on Friday.
Logal won the 100 breaststroke (1:13.31) and 200 freestyle (2:20.03) and teamed with Johnson, Caitlin Isaac and Brittany Steever to win the 200 medley relay (2:03.45). Johnson won the 200 individual medley (2:24.52) and 500 freestyle (5:36.87). Her margin of victory in the 500 freestyle was 51 seconds.
Nixa, which won the team title, received firsts from Anna Brinck in the 100 freestyle (56.12) and its 200 freestyle relay (1:50.38). Brinck beat Steever by a tenth of a second.
Runner-up Ozark saw Ashley Short take first in the 100 butterfly (1:06.73) and 100 backstroke (1:11.26) and its 400 freestyle relay claim gold (4:21.30).
Marshfield’s Jessica Stepp was the 1-meter diving champ (334.95 points).
Johnson set two meet records, while Logal, Brinck and Nixa’s 200 freestyle relay also established new meet marks.

Bade, Lady Irish beat Buffalo (Girls basketball roundup)

SPRINGFIELD — Bekah Bade scored 22 points to help Springfield Catholic past Buffalo 53–36 in Central Ozark Conference Small Schools Division action on Thursday.
The Lady Irish were also led by Danielle Lampe’s 10 points.
Buffalo received 12 points apiece from Brittany Glasscock and Jordan Davidson.

— Hollister downed Reeds Spring 57–41.

Willard remains perfect in COC play

REPUBLIC — Willard overcame a 31-point effort by Republic’s Kevin Stander to down the host Tigers 65–56 on Friday.
Willard upped its record to 14–9 overall and 5–0 in the COC Large Schools Division. Skyler Frazier topped the winners with 18 points and Tim Huskisson added 10.
In addition to Stander’s 31, Republic received nine from Dylan Fletcher.
Elsewhere on Friday:
— Marshfield was a 72–45 winner over Hollister in a COC Small Schools Division matchup.
Seth Martin’s 15 points and Josh Fletcher’s 14 led Hollister.
— Springfield Catholic overcame a slow start to knock off Buffalo 45–35.
The Irish fell behind 9–0, before gaining a 21–20 halftime lead.
Catholic (13−8 overall and 3–2 in the COC Small Schools Division) was paced by Jack Wolf and his 13 points.
The Bison’s Jordan Henderson had eight points in the first quarter and finished with a dozen.
— Reeds Spring bounced back from an overtime loss to Rogersville earlier in the week by winning at Bolivar 69–59.
The Wolves (11−9 overall and 3–1 in the COC Small Schools Division) hit 14-of-17 free-throws in the fourth quarter.
Bolivar led 21–13, but Reeds Spring scored 25 points in the second quarter to gain control and had 24 in the fourth quarter.
Ben Selby led the Wolves with 21 points, Jack McCoy and Chris Jones both contributed 14 and Kyle Fleck contributed eight.
The Liberators’ Dalton Kelly netted 22 points and Preson Guiot 17.
— Branson gained win No. 22 by outlasing Neosho 76–66.
The Pirates’ Avery Dingman had a team-high 22 points, Dana Thomas had 16 and Tee Helsel 15.

Lady Pirates tie record for wins (Girls basketball roundup)

CARTHAGE — Branson matched its school record for single-season wins by gaining its 19th win on Tuesday, a 50–46 triumph over Carthage.
The Lady Pirates (19−6 overall and 4–3 in the Central Ozark Conference Large Schools Division) join three other Branson teams with 19 wins.
Michaela Dapprich topped the winners with 23 points, while Ruby Stevens had nine and Kristina Dodd eight.
Elsewhere on Tuesday:
— Marshfield downed Hollister 57–47 in a Central Ozark Conference Small Schools Division game.
The Lady Jays upped their overall record to 14–9 and their conference mark to 4–2.

Five COC wrestlers crowned state champions

COLUMBIA — The Central Ozark Conference produced a handful of state champions, with Neosho having a trio of champs, at the MSHSAA State Wrestling Tournament on Saturday.
Class 3 featured a pair of All-COC finals.
At 112, Neosho’s Joe Barnes edged Carthage’s Nate Kelley 3–1. Barnes finishes with a 43–7 record. At 119, Neosho’s Trevor Hughes downed Carthage’s Trevor Feagans 5–1. Hughes ends with a 36–6 mark.
Ozark’s Dylan May claimed the 135-pound title by pinning Kearney’s Tanner Minder in 4:55. May finishes with a 30–4 record. Neosho’s Blake Stauffer was a dominating 171-pound state champion. His closest match at state was an 11–4 victory. Staffer ends with a 52–1 mark.
Class 3 state runners-up included Neosho 103-pounder Nate Rodriguez (48−6), Neosho 130-pounder Jared Brock (30−10), Ozark 152-pounder Zeb Spicer (38−7) and Willard 215-pounder Joel Wyman (43−2).
In Class 2, Rogersville senior Sam Zimmer three-peated as a state champion en route to winning the 130-pound title. He scored a 3–1 decision over Pleasant Hill’s Joshua Hastings in the final to up his record to 46–2.
Class 2 state runners-up were Bolivar 119-pounder Eric Hughes (41−2) and Reeds Spring 135-pounder Steven Morey (43−1).

Barns, Neosho pull out dramatic win (Baseball roundup)

NEOSHO — Jacob Barns drove in Jacob Rickman on a walk-off RBI-single to lift Neosho’s baseball team to a 4–3 Central Ozark Conference Large Schools Division win over Carthage on Thursday.
The Wildcats also had a walk-off COC win earlier this season over Willard.
Pirates down Republic
Mike Compton threw a four-hitter while striking out wight and Timmy Townsend hit a three-run homer in Branson’s 5–2 win over Republic.
Tyler King homered for the Tigers.Branson is 10–3 overall and 2–0 in the COC Large Schools Division.

Republic takes team title (Girls track roundup)

BOLIVAR — Republic’s girls track team claimed the Bolivar Relays championship on Thursday.
Republic’s Sharla Friend took first in the high jump (5−3). The Lady Tigers’ Hailey Willis was second in the 1,600 (5:45), as was Alex Botkin in the 100 hurdles (17.19) and 300 hurdles (49.66), Jeanna Beck in the discus (105−11), Clarissa Watkins in the 100 (13.65) and Miranda Cunningham in the pole vault (8−6). Their 4 x 800 relay (11:00) was third.
Host Bolivar received firsts from Rachel Schrader in the 3,200 (11:50) and its 4 x 800 relay (10:36.32). The Lady Liberators’ 4 x 400 relay (4:25.72) finished second. Their 4 x 100 relay was third (54.3), as was their 4 x 200 relay (1:55.20), Elizabeth Wharton in the pole vault (8−6) and Ashley Payne in the 100 hurdles (17.31).
Firsts for Branson included Gabby Ruddick in the 400 (1:03), Michaela Dapprich in the discus (119−5) and Shelby Shields in the pole vault (9−0). Ruddick was second in the high jump (5−2) and Dapprich was second in the shot put (35−5). The Lady Pirates’ Brianna Winn was third in the long jump (14−10.25) and triple jump (31−1.75)
Marshfield’s Jessica Stepp captured first in the long jump (16−8.75). The Lady Jays’ 4 x 400 relay (4:26.08) was third.
Buffalo was led by Brittany Glasscock, who was second in the triple jump (31−11.25).

Bolivar claims Willard Tournament title (Soccer roundup)

WILLARD — Bolivar defeated Willard twice en route to winning the Willard Tournament title over the weekend.
The Lady Liberators beat the Lady Tigers by counts of 3–1 and 4–1. Earlier, they knocked off Marshfield 5–0.
Nixa downs Waynesville
Nixa beat non-conference foe Waynesville 1–0 on Friday.
